Imagine stepping out onto your beautiful grey composite decking only to find it covered in stubborn lichen and algae. This was the reality for our recent customers Composite Decking in Hul. Despite their best efforts to pressure wash the decking themselves, the lichen and algae refused to budge. That’s where we came in. Let’s walk through the steps we took to restore this deck to its original splendour.
Clearing the Composite Decking of Pots and Furniture
Our first task was to clear the deck of any pots, furniture, and decor. This step is crucial for several reasons. First, it gives us full access to the decking, ensuring no area is left untreated. Second, it protects your belongings from potential damage during the cleaning process. With a clear deck, we were ready to get to work.
Rinsing the Area to Remove Surface Dirt
Before applying any chemicals, we needed to rinse the area to remove loose dirt and debris. Think of this step as prepping a wall before painting. By removing the surface layer of dirt, we allowed the cleaning agents to penetrate deeper and more effectively tackle the stubborn lichen and algae. Using a garden hose, we thoroughly rinsed the deck, ensuring it was ready for the next step.
Chemical Application
With the surface dirt out of the way, it was time to apply a specialized chemical solution designed to break down and remove lichen and algae. We carefully selected a product safe for composite decking to avoid any potential damage. Applying the chemical evenly across the decking, we let it sit for the recommended amount of time. This dwell time is essential as it allows the chemical to penetrate and start dissolving the stubborn contaminants.
Pressure Wash
Despite the chemical treatment, some areas still had lingering contaminants. For these, we used a pressure washer on a medium setting. It’s important to use the right pressure; too high, and you risk damaging the composite material; too low, and you won’t effectively remove the contaminants. We meticulously cleaned the deck with the pressure washer, focusing on any stubborn spots. The medium pressure was perfect for lifting any remaining algae and lichen without harming the decking.
Rinse Down
After the chemicals and Pressure wash had done its job, we performed a full rinse down to wash away the loosened lichen and algae. This step is crucial to prevent any residue from remaining on the decking, which could cause discolouration or damage over time. We thoroughly rinsed the deck, ensuring all traces of the chemicals and contaminants were washed away.
The Result
The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Once dull and covered in lichen and algae, the grey composite decking now looked as good as new. Our customer was amazed. He had assumed the decking was beyond restoration, but we soon had it looking like it was freshly installed. The vibrant grey tones of the composite decking were back, and the entire outdoor space felt refreshed and inviting.
